Oracle Fusion SCM: Understanding the Procure-to-Pay Flow

Procure-to-pay (P2P) describes the connected activities used to request, purchase, receive, and pay for goods or services. The exact process depends on organizational policy, enabled Oracle modules, approvals, and integration design.

1. Requisition

A requester identifies a business need and creates a requisition. Key checks include the item or service, quantity, delivery location, accounting information, supplier information where applicable, and required approvals.

2. Approval and purchasing

After approval, the purchasing team may process the requisition into a purchase order or use the configured purchasing flow. Approval rules, document controls, and supplier terms help ensure that purchasing follows policy.

3. Receiving

When goods or services arrive, receiving records the delivery according to the organization’s process. Quantity discrepancies, inspection, corrections, returns, and receipt status can affect downstream processing.

4. Supplier invoice and matching

The supplier invoice is processed in the finance workflow. Matching rules may compare the invoice with the purchase order and receipt. Holds or exceptions should be investigated before the invoice proceeds.

5. Accounting and reconciliation

Relevant transactions are accounted for and reconciled according to the configured finance process. Teams should verify the status of each document, accounting events, and any errors that prevent transactions from moving forward.

Useful troubleshooting questions

  • Is the document approved and in the expected status?
  • Are supplier, item, business unit, and accounting details valid?
  • Was the expected receipt recorded correctly?
  • Are matching tolerances or invoice holds involved?
  • Did accounting complete, and does the result reconcile to the expected balances?

Do not assume every implementation uses the same approval path or matching rules. Always check the organization’s documented process and configured controls.
